Air Jordan 4 “Midnight Navy”

Up close with the clean new Jordan 4 colorway.

After the Chicago Bulls defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the ‘89 NBA Playoffs, for a moment it seemed like the Air Jordan 4 was going to be Michael Jordan’s first championship shoe in the NBA. But the moment was fleeting. The Bulls eventually ran into the Detroit Pistons, who had other plans, so we never got to see Michael hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy in some 4s.

The fact that the shoe doesn’t have the championship pedigree as other Air Jordans from its era hasn’t tarnished its legacy. Decades later, the Jordan 4 is as revered as any sneaker in history and, maybe, just maybe even more popular now than it was in the ‘80s and ‘90s. That’s largely because new colorways, like the Air Jordan 4 “Midnight Navy” set to release later this month on October 29th, are continuing to tell the shoe’s story.

The “Midnight Navy” has a similar vibe to another sweet-looking Jordan 4, the “Legend Blue.” Once known as the “Columbia” colorway, the “Legend Blue” debuted in the early 2000s under Jordan Brand’s former “Retro+” collection, which spun classic Jordan models in off-court-friendly colors. The “Midnight Navy’s” design references don’t stop there.

At its core, the colorway draws favorably from the Air Jordan 4 “White Cement,” the shoe Michael wore to debut the model over the ‘89 NBA All-Star Weekend. The “Midnight Navy” features the same color block as the “White Cement,” but replaces the latter’s red accents with navy.

As you can see, the “Midnight Navy” is a nod to the two eras that have defined the Jordan 4: the “OG era,” and the “retro era.” At the end of the day, who can ask for much more in an Air Jordan shoe?
